Mini Linux distribution is a small distribution which have a small size and usually requires low amount of RAM memory to run. These distributions can easily run on any computer allowing you to run them from CD’s or other devices like USB flash memory.
I am going to show you the best Mini Linux distributions currently available on the market. Of course, these are all free to download, install and use.
Damn Small Linux (DSL)
It is probably one of the smallest Linux distributions available right now for you. It is a completely free open-source distribution which is designed to run on older PC hardware and machines. Anyway, it is a very fast and functional distribution.
DSL requirements are really modest. This distribution supports only x86 processors with 8 Mb’s of RAM memory. It is one of the smallest functional distributions with only 50 MB in size! Can boot from USB memory stick and CD (LiveCD).
Puppy Linux
This is one of the most advanced mini Linux distributions for me. It is a lightweight operating system which can be run entirely from RAM. It is designed to be easy-to-use for anyone! Interesting fact is that Puppy is not based on any other Linux distribution.
Puppy Linux is a small distribution (94 Mb) and requires you to have at least 128 Mb’s of RAM. Can run from any device, from USB memory to an emulation. Loads fast and it is regularly updated.
Tiny Core Linux
TCL is an extremely minimalist Linux distribution. Providing you actually a base system core with support for minimalist software releases. It is really unbelievable how one functional system can be included in only 10 Mb! It is primarily developed to run from RAM.
That makes Tiny Core flexible enough to be stored and run from a dusty old laptop, old USB sticks, a just-about-full CD, or even non-traditional devices and embedded systems like mobile phones and hand-held hardware.
Slax Linux
It is one of the most advanced mini Linux distribution currently available on the internet. On of the primary features of this distribution is support for easy modular import. Additional software can easily be added or removed from it within just a few clicks.
It is designed to be easy-to-use for anyone. Also, you can easily modify and customize the CD image or to the Slax USB drive installation. It is lightweight distribution (200 Mb) with modern interface support.
SliTaz Linux
It is a community-based system which can easily fit into 100 Mb of space. Can run entirely from RAM and also can be installed on your hard drive. Can boot from CD (LiveCD) or from USB stick.
This distribution already have more than 1400 packages included. Including some useful applications like Audio Player, CD Ripping, Chat, Email and FTP client, Firefox, Database Engine, SSH Client and more. All of that in 100 Mb’s – cool!
