How to Defrag your System

Disk defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. The defragmenting tool can reduce the time it takes to load programs and open files in your system, as well organize them correctly.

In this post, I’ll show you how to defrag your operating system. Including the default defragmentation tools and options in the different operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

Windows Defragment

Windows file-system is the most complex than with Linux or Mac OS systems. For sure, you’ll get the best effect with defragmentation of the Windows file system. And there are many ways to do that. There, I will include the defragmentation tool integrated with any Windows operating system – Disk Defragmenter.

It’s important to note that Disk Defragmenter tool is a very effective tool under Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 systems because it includes the advanced defragmentation techniques.

There’re many ways to open and start this tool under Windows operating system. Probably the fastest way is to run the special command under Run tool (in Windows XP), or by typing defrag or disk defragmenter in the Windows Vista or Windows 7 start menu.

Start Disk Defragmenter (Windows 7)

Start Disk Defragmenter (Windows 7)

When you open this application, you can schedule an automatic defragmentation, analyze your disks for defrag and defragment your system Hard Drives.

Note that Disk defragmentation can take up to the several hours to complete, specially if you have a large HDD’s with a large amount of data and files.

Mac OS Defragment

Defragging a Mac hard drive is a thing of the past because the way that Mac OS X organize and optimize it’s file-system. After installing system updates or new application on Mac OS X machine, the computer will try to optimize itself. There’re ways to periodically clean up and defrag your Mac OS system but it wont get too much improvements like on Windows file-system for sure.

The best way to speed-up your Mac file-system is to open the Disc Utility program, located in the Utility folder in your Applications list on Mac OS computer. Highlight your hard drive from the list and have the program repair the permissions.

Mac OS X Disk Utility

Mac OS X Disk Utility

This is an easy way to correct some common computer errors which could be slowing your hard drive down. Another way is to use a specialized Mac OS application called iDefrag which can defrag your hard drives easily and you can try it for free. Anyway, it’s a paid application to explore the full potential and functionality of it.

Linux Defragment

A lot of Linux users ask this question. How to successfully defragment a HDD in the Linux operating system. The answer to this question is a pretty easy – you probably don’t need to defrag your Linux file-system.

The file system under Linux, and other UNIX-based operating systems is organized and stored much more effectively than with Windows operating system. On these systems, fragmentation of the files is usually under 1 percent! But with Windows it comes up to 20 or more percents!

Anyway, there’re some tools that allow you to defrag your Linux operating system. There’s one native solution where you can defrag your Unix-based file system. This application is called Linux File-system defragmenter and you can download it completely for free.

Linux Command Line (Konsole)

Linux Command Line (Konsole)

It’s an application which run only in the command-line environment. To use The Linux File-System Defragmenter, download and expand the tarball and type “make” in the command-line terminal.

Use of the utility can be implemented with the following command:

#defragfs /mnt/hda1

Specification of “-f” will also force defragmentation (without quotes).

I hope I’ve help you to defrag and boost your system performances. Defragment can take some time on the large Hard Drives and on the certain systems.

I think the Windows defragger has limitations and its too slow for heavy defragging. I prefer to use Diskeeper to defrag my drives in automatic real time mode. Its the best alternative to the Windows program
